We are thrilled to announce the 2024 recipient of the Bob Carney Commitment to Community Scholarship – Bethany Carrington!
The $2500 scholarship is awarded to a local high school senior who demonstrates academic excellence along with a strong commitment to the local community through service and volunteerism.
Bethany graduated from Calvary Christian Academy’s Home School Program and plans to attend college in the fall to pursue a nursing degree. When she is finished with school, she hopes to return to Garrett County and give back to the community by working as a geriatric nurse.
Bethany has given back to the community in many ways. As a member of her homeschool group’s theater outreach program, she performed in their annual free, faith-based drama production for the community. Bethany was both an actor and director’s assistant and was deeply touched by the people who shared how the production positively impacted them.
In 2024, she traveled with her brother to Puerto Rico with Calvary Christian Academy’s senior class. They spent a week in the small town of Ponce serving with the SEND Relief mission organization. While there, Bethany helped to work on the house of an elderly man who had recently broken his foot. They painted his home and completed much needed repairs to the roof. Despite the heat, she found the work to be very satisfying. At the end of the week, the group shared a tearful goodbye with the homeowner.
Bethany is also an active member of Zion Lutheran Church in Accident where she taught vacation bible school and Sunday school and assisted with a variety of tasks for church events.
In addition to her roles as a volunteer, her job is one of service to the elderly. Bethany is a feeding assistant at Goodwill Retirement Community in Grantsville, Maryland. In this position, she is responsible for passing out meal trays to the residents and assisting them with eating as necessary. This exposure to the world of geriatric care inspired her to become a geriatric nurse.
About the Bob Carney Commitment to Community Scholarship
The Bob Carney Commitment to Community Scholarship was created to honor the memory of Bob Carney. He was our longtime friend as well as our Broker and Sales Manager from 2016-2021. His efforts and leadership built a strong foundation for our real estate team and helped us grow to be one of the largest real estate firms in the area. He was passionate about his work with Taylor-Made along with his involvement with the community.Â
To honor is legacy, Taylor-Made owners Jay Ferguson, Betsy Holcomb, Chad Taylor, Jodi Refosco, and Joe Refosco established the scholarship. His friend, Pat Franc, also took part in the award’s development and helps select recipients. Sheila McCracken, an agent at Taylor-Made Deep Creek Sales, plays an integral part in the scholarship committee and the process of reviewing applicants.
We are proud to award this scholarship to Bethany for her exemplary involvement in the local community. She is sure to go far, and it is our pleasure to reward her efforts.
