Garrett County property owners will see a slight decrease in their local real property tax rate for the upcoming fiscal year following approval from the Garrett County Commissioners. The rate will drop from $1.02 to $1.00 per $100 of assessed value.
County officials say the reduction is designed to provide meaningful relief to residents and commercial property owners while still maintaining the County’s strong financial position and ability to fund essential services.
The decision came after a detailed review of current financial projections and long-term obligations. According to county leaders, Garrett County remains in a stable position to responsibly lower the rate without impacting critical operations or future planning efforts.
“This will help a lot of people across the county,” said Garrett County Commissioner Larry Tichnell.
While Garrett County determines the local tax rate, property assessments are handled by the State of Maryland. The state assesses property values and phases in adjustments every three years, a process that can significantly impact county revenue projections and budget planning.
