Northern Lights at Deep Creek Lake

The northern lights made their second appearance in Maryland this year. On October 10, 2024 we were able to see them in Garrett County. Our media team captured photos and a time-lapse of the northern lights at Deep Creek Lake.

Prior to the event, the Space Weather Prediction Center issued a severe geomagnetic storm watch for the 10th, after scientists detected a coronal mass ejection. That is a large blast of plasma and magnetic field from the sun’s surface. These solar storms are what creates the aurora borealis.
