The northern lights made their second appearance in Maryland this year. On October 10, 2024 we were able to see them in Garrett County. Our media team captured photos and a time-lapse of the northern lights at Deep Creek Lake.
Prior to the event, the Space Weather Prediction Center issued a severe geomagnetic storm watch for the 10th, after scientists detected a coronal mass ejection. That is a large blast of plasma and magnetic field from the sun’s surface. These solar storms are what creates the aurora borealis.
